A really pretty H.J.Wood Bursley Ware TL.14 pattern (unnamed) Jug by Charlotte Rhead dating to the 1940's. This jug is in stunning condition and is typical of the tube-lined work by Charlotte Rhead with bold designs and striking colours. The TL14 pattern depicts multicoloured plants, with tulips and stylised flower heads between bands of yellow and mauve on a cream ground. The jug handle is formed as a twisted rope design in green, which continues around the base and neck, with a green band inside the lip.
The jug is marked to the base 'Bursley-Ware Charlotte Rhead England' and carries the hand-written pattern number TL14 and the tubeliners mark I, for May Powell
The jug measures approximately 9 inches tall, and is in superb condition, with no chips, cracks or restoration. There is a small amount of crazing to the glaze, only visible on the cream ground and on close scrutiny. This crazing is perfectly normal and is due to the ceramic body expanding and contracting very slightly with temperature variations.
A really pretty jug, which is very evocative of the era and would make a lovely addition to a Charlotte Rhead collection or as a really good example of mid-20th Century pottery from a famous designer.
