An early T2901 Urn Vase from the Troika Pottery, this vase is approximately 10 inches (26cm) tall by 5 inches (13 cm) wide and decorated by Honor Curtis (formally Perkins) who worked for Troika between 1968 and 1973. However she married in 1969 and changed her mark from HP to HC which dates the manufacture of this vase from 1969.
The 'Urn' was Troika's take on a classically shaped vase which was conventionally hand-thrown on a potters wheel. The vase is decorated in a rough finish, but does not have the full-blown 'sand' texture as is usually found on the Urns and Cylinders, and the decoration is much more muted. This along with the tin-glazed foot recess leads us to believe that this is a very early version of what will become the standard urn. Troika ceased glazing foot recesses just before the move to Newlyn to cut down on costs and time, which means that this must be a St. Ives piece and therefore would have been made in 1969.
As previously noted, the vase has a heavy grainy rough finish and is decorated in shades of light and dark brown, light blue and moss green. The inside of the vase is in the titanium white high gloss tin glaze. The base carries the usual Troika hand-painted marks and Honor's initials in black over the titanium tin-glaze
This vase is in good condition however it does have two shallow chips to the rim, both in close proximity which can be seen in the second sub-photograph. Under normal circumstances we wouldn't offer pieces with damage, but we believe this Urn merits inclusion in our catalogue, and the price reflects the problem. A really nice vase that would certainly fit in to any Troika or Cornish Ceramics collection.
