An extremely rare Clarice Cliff Autumn Crocus Vase in the 342 shape. These vases are seldom found in Crocus and are highly prized by collectors. Dating to between 1930 and 1935, it carries the black 'Hand Painted Bizarre by Clarice Cliff Newport Pottery England' backstamp.
Painted in strong colours, there are three individual panels of large, bold crocus flowers against a cream honeyglaze ground, one panel painted slightly differently with a dominant blue flower in the centre. The green base band and earth-colour lower band are virtually unmarked and extremely well and evenly painted. The vase rim is painted in a strikingly bright yellow, with green edge lines.
No chips, cracks or crazing, and the flowers show no sign of oxidisation which can be seen on many Crocus pieces, particularly on the purple and occasionally the blue flowers.
The vase stands an impressive 8 inches (>20cm) tall, and has a maximum diameter across the rim and the vase waist of just under 6 inches (approx. 15cm). It is shown next to a large Honey Pot for comparison (note, the Honey Pot is NOT included!); The crocus flowers on the vase are almost as big as the whole Honey Pot!
A rare and significant piece worthy of a place in any Art Deco collection.
