A stunning Edwardian era set of six Silver Apostle Spoons and Sugar Tongs manufactured and sold by the world renowned Mappin & Webb.
The spoons and tongs are all a matching set, the spoons all having the Sheffield Hallmark and date stamp for 1904, the tongs having been assayed in 1903. Each piece carries the Mappin & Webb (M&W) mark alongside the assay office mark. In absolutely superb condition, they appear unused. Total weight of silver is 110g.
The spoons are unusual in that the bowls are heavily decorated in an Art Nuveau style of scrolling stems and leaves. The outside of the grips on the sugar tongs is in the same pattern. Each spoon sports a 'praying apostle', with the tongs having one each side of the spring. The set comes in its original presentation box, the lid of which carries a silver plaque with the words 'In Commemoration of your Silver Wedding Mar.1.06. From Jack'. This plaque could be very easily removed and reversed, with a new inscription applied. We have left as is.
