Moorcroft Pottery was founded in 1913 by William Moorcroft who pioneered a design and glazing technique called 'tube lining' where the pattern is 'drawn' onto the base pot using something not unlike an icing bag. This forms a ridge and coloured glazes are applied to the various areas delimited by the tube-line design. This technique gives the pottery a wonderful tactile three dimensional look and feel. William Moorcroft handed the reigns of the company over to his son Walter in 1945, who introduced many of his own styles and designs into the catalogue. The pottery is still running today, and whilst modern pieces are very collectable, William and Walter Moorcroft designed pieces are much more sought after, particularly those carrying a full signature or monogram. Dating Moorcroft can at times be a little tricky, though certain marks, stamps and labels can make the task much easier. We aim to provide as much dating information as possible on each piece and always show the foot of the piece so you, the purchaser can conduct your own research before you commit to buy.
