Shelley as we know it today began back in 1860 when Henry Wileman built the Foley China Works next to his Foley Potteries factory. James B Shelley joined the company in 1862 as a salesman/traveller and became a partner in 1872. His son Percy joined in 1881, bringing in top designers and artists, such as Frederick Rhead who became Art Director in 1896. The trading name was changed from Foley China to Shelley China in 1910, and then later became known as Shelley. Other famous artists associated with the brand include Walter Slater and his son Eric, with their Art Deco shapes and patterns, and Mabel Lucie Atwell of children's ware fame. Various family members continued the business until it was taken over by Allied English Potteries in 1966. « Back |
