One of the 'holy grails' of Troika collecting is the T4201 Wall Pocket Vase. These unusual pieces are a cross between a wholly decorative wall plaque and a practical vase and were intended to display fresh cut or dried flowers in the six holes or 'pockets'. These are rare as they were designed and made late in the life of the pottery and were not at all easy to produce, with more ending up in the scrap bin than in the shop! Many that made it into the shop had casting, fettling or firing flaws, and this particular piece is no exception and has a minor firing crack across one of the hanging holes. Fortunately this is on the reverse of the piece and is perfectly stable.
This wall pocket has been beautifully decorated by Alison Brigden in a stunning mixture of Troika blue, brown grey and moss green. Alison worked for Troika from 1976 to 1983 and was the senior decorator between 1981 and 1983 after taking over the role from Louise Jinks on her departure in 1981.
The size is 8 inches (20cm) tall by 6½ inches (16.5 cm) wide and stands off the wall by about 2 inches. For its size it is extremely heavy as there is an awful lot of ceramic in this piece.
A stunning, rare and very sought after Troika piece that would grace any serious Troika collection and a piece that is sure to appreciate in value due to its rarity.
