Amongst one of the most desirable of all Troika pieces is the T0101 Anvil Vase, so named because of it's similarity in shape to a blacksmiths metal anvil. This example has been decorated in deep relief on both faces by Avril Bennet who worked at Troika Newlyn from 1973 to 1979. Avril's work is some of the most desirable because of her use of strong vibrant colours and crisp, clear decoration.
The rough matt stone glaze vase is decorated predominantly in a moss green colour with highlighted patterns in light blue, mid blue and white/grey. Internally glazed in high-gloss titanium white tin glaze with a black rim edge. This rare and impressive piece stands 22cm (8½ inches) high and is 23cm (9 inches) at its widest point and is 6cm (2½ inches) deep.
In excellent condition, this piece would form the centrepiece of any Troika collection. We do not manage to buy many of these highly desirable 'works of art' as they just don't turn up at auction any more, and most collectors are hanging onto them. This piece along with some other interesting and rare pieces came from a private collection and are fresh to the market.
This wonderful vase has no chips, cracks or restoration, but does have an over-glazed fettling flaw to the base which would have happened when the vase was in its biscuit form prior to decorating and second firing. This minor flaw can't be seen when the vase is standing and in no way detracts from the beauty of this piece.
