An absolutely stunning piece of glass from the highly renowned designer Tapio Wirkkala and designed for the Scandinavian design company, Iittala in 1967. This particular piece is a Console Bowl in Tapio's Stellaria design, which captures the essence of the Ice formations of Tapio's native Finland.
Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was one of the pioneers of Finnish industrial art who gained international recognition in the years following the Second World War. He sought inspiration for his design from Finlands arctic mystique, wintry landscapes and glass-clear ice. Whilst he created designes used in everyday wares, he is best known for his stunning art pieces.
This Stellaria bowl absolutely demonstrates the essence of his inspiration and looks like a massive natural ice formation. Standing some 7 inches tall and approximately 11 inches maximum diameter it would make an impressive centrepiece. The base of the bowl is engraved with Tapio's signature mark showing this is a genuine piece. The original Iittala label is still present on the inside of the bowl.
Conditition is excellent with absolutely no chips or damage. There are a few scratches to the ground and polished base which is exactly what you want to see for a piece of this vintage.
A bowl exactly the same as this was sold at Christies in South Kensington in October 2002 for £470!
