This is a lovely Whitefriars pattern 9818 'Mallet' or 'Long Neck' vase in the Tangerine colourway, designed by Geoffrey Baxter and produced between 1972 and 1974. This vase is in stunning condition and has its original Whitefriars label still applied to the neck, and has no chips, cracks or scratches. The base of the vase has a few small wear/use marks as you would hope to find on a piece of this age. No Pontil on this pattern of vase as it has the ground and polished rim as opposed to the flame polished rim, which did not require the use of the Punty Rod to hold the vase neck into the furnace.
In 1965 Baxter dragged the Whitefriars glass works in London into the 20th Century with his iconic 'textured range' which used radical production methods whereby many of the moulds were 'patterned' with nails, wire, bark, bits of wood and metal to create the designs, with the mould not only giving the surface texture but also the shape. Each piece is hand blown and no two pieces are exactly the same.
This vase would make a really great starter piece for a contemporary glass collection, or as a great addition to any Whitefriars collection, further enhanced by the fact that the vase still has its original label intact.
