1960's Studio glass has become a popular collectors category, and amongst the producers Whitefriars Glass is one of the big names. Whitefriars Glass was established by James Powell in 1894, but it is the designs of Geoffrey Baxter from the 1960s with their spectacular colourways and unusual shapes which are eyecatching to today's collectors. Baxter joined the company in 1954, bringing in a new concept of blowing glass into textured moulds which he often 'knocked up' in his shed using things readily to hand, such as wood bark, staples and nails. His vases often have angular forms and the shapes are easily recognisable - 'banjo', 'drunken bricklayer', 'concentric TV' to name but a few. The shapes and textures were complimented by a wonderful range of colours including cinnamon, indigo, tangerine, kingfisher and aubergine.
