A stunning retro Whitefriars pattern 9731 'Pineapple' or 'Pinecone' vase designed by Geoffrey Baxter from the 1969 catalogue and in the rare Pewter (smoke grey) colourway. This vase is in top condition with no chips, cracks or scratches to the body. The base of the vase has a few wear/use marks as you should see on a piece of this vintage, and has the highly polished and ground Pontil mark where the punty rod was attached to handle the vase whilst the rim was flame polished, and then snapped off and ground out on an abrasive wheel.
In 1965 Baxter dragged the Whitefriars glass works in London into the 20th Century with his iconic 'textured range' which used radical production methods whereby many of the moulds were 'patterned' with nails, wire, bark, bits of wood and metal to create the designs, with the mould not only giving the surface texture but also the shape. Each piece is hand blown and no two pieces are exactly the same.
This vase would make a really great starter piece for a retro or contemporary glass collection, or as a great addition to any Whitefriars collection. Would look good in any setting, especially where the light can shine through showing the colour off to the best effect.
Dimensions: height 7 inches (18cm), max diameter 3 inches (8cm) approximately.
