An early Burslem Pomegranate vase by William Moorcroft, circa 1914 in a varied green and blue ground with six wonderfully clear pomegranates, two of which are cut open showing their seeds. The pomegranates are surrounded by an abundance of leaves and grapes.
The base of the vase has the Moorcroft Burslem backstamp dating it between 1914 - 1916 and William Moorcroft's full signature written by him in fine green glaze, along with the impressed shape number M55. This early version of Pomegranate is highly desirable, particularly with such a fine and clear signature, with pieces in undamaged condition getting much harder to find.
In beautiful condition with no chips, cracks or restoration, and a very light overall crazing to the surface glaze, this would make a stunning addition to any Moorcroft collection. The vase is approximately 3¾ inches (9.5cm) high by 4 inches (10cm) maximum diameter. Sounds quite small, but it's quite a chunky and impressive vase in a lovely rare shape.
Moorcroft prices are rising at an alarming rate with collectors and investors taking their money out of their poorly performing bank accounts and putting their money in tangible assets. Good quality early pieces are getting harder to find and are quickly snapped up.
